This week’s book for “The Dog-Eared Page” is far from typical. In fact it is not a book at all; it is a journal. It is one story by one author—you.
With prompts on every page, “Wreck This Journal” by Keri Smith is created entirely by the reader.
The idea behind the book is that “to create is to destroy,” and it certainly pushes the reader to step out of their comfort zone.
Some pages inspire creativity with simple prompts such as “color this entire page.” You can either color the page one solid color or you create a work of art.
Other pages push readers to do things such as “tear strips: rip it up,” making most book lovers cringe. This can be taken literally in which you actually tear up the page, or it can be made into something beautiful such as “paper-cut art.”
However, with creative acts left to the reader’s own interpretations, your book can end up beautiful or completely wrecked.
There is no right or wrong way, and this book engages the reader fully in the creative process.
For those who have always wanted to journal but have a hard time either starting one, keeping one, or finishing one, this book is a great way to start.
It is fun, creative and unlike anything I have ever seen before. Once you pick it up, you won’t want to stop until you’ve fully wrecked your journal.
Other similar books by Keri Smith include “This is not a book“, “Mess: The Manual of Accidents and Mistakes“, “How to be an Explorer of the World: Portable Life Museum“, and “Finish This Book“. They can be purchased at most bookstores or online.
