Pack your bags and take your last final because it’s time to go home for the summer. Before you jump in your car and head home, you have to move out of your dorm room first. Here’s how to make sure you move out properly and don’t leave anything behind in the process.
If you haven’t already, it’s probably a good idea to start taking a few things home at a time. This way you aren’t overwhelmed to move everything out on move out day.
“I just started taking little things home like my books, some clothes and my lamp, so I didn’t have as much to move out when it was time,” said senior Education major Abby Potts.
The first thing you need to do before you leave is check with your RA and schedule a checkout time. You can sign up to check out as early as April 27 and the latest you can check out unless you plan to stay for summer is the last day of finals on Saturday, April 28.
If you are planning on staying for half the summer and then returning, you might want to check out anyway.
“If you are not here but do not check out, any damage done to the room or the apartment while you are gone will be your responsibility and you could get a fine for it,” said Owen RA Taylor Marshall. Be safe rather than sorry and check out unless you plan to be in your dorm all summer.
The last step and the most important is getting all your belonging out of your dorm. Once you get everything out of your room, go back and check everywhere to make sure you didn’t forget anything. Once you leave, the RA gets your key and you won’t be able to get back in your room to retrieve your things.
Depending on which dorm you live in, there may be different terms for moving out. For more detailed instructions on moving out, feel free to go to your RA or the front desk in your residence and ask for a move out sheet detailing the requirements specific to that residence.
Also make sure you go over with your roommates what stuff belongs to which roommate, especially cooking utensils, bathroom supplies and anything else that was used in a community setting.
When you have all your things packed, you need to let the RA walk through the dorm to make sure nothing was left behind, no damages were unmentioned and to ensure that the dorm will be ready for the next inhabitant.
Now that you have all your belongings, your room is neat and clean for the next semester and the RA has your key and paperwork, you can tell your friends goodbye and drive off into summer vacation.
